Design Engineering Interview Questions

Q- On what project were you working lastly?
Expectation- What are the insights of the projects? Detailed description of your strength on the project.
Answer- Candidate must give detail insight of project. Then he should highlight his own strength to interviewer.
In recent (xyz) company, I have worked on Design of (Project name), (Name of Sub-system and their components).
I was involved in structural part of the project I have worked on benchmarking- Finite Element Analysis- Design Modification- Prototyping and mass Production Activities.
The project was completed using following tools-
1.      CAD modeling and drafting was done in (Software name) at combimaster level,
2.      Load calculations for FEA,
3.      Modification on the basis of FEA result till design finalization.
4.      After prototyping was done, modification were performed on existing design, then assembly and fitment and were made ready for production.

Q - How did you materialize (material selection) the project.
Expectation- The interviewer wants to know the in depth knowledge of metallurgy.
Answer- On the basis of benchmarking, the material were selected. With considering cost, availability, mechanical properties, chemical properties and machinability collaborating with purchase team.

Q- What are the materials you used in past projects?
Expectation- The interviewer wants to know the in depth knowledge of metallurgy, mechanical and chemical of material.
Answer- Answer may vary from project to project. For example, in the design of structural parts you may quote the steel, aluminum and cast iron as the major material (usually used for structural design all over the world).

Q- Draw Stress Strain curve for brittle and ductile material. Explain them.
Expectation- Candidate should be aware of the stress-strain diagram of the material used in project example of material like steel, aluminum and CI.
Answer-

Q- What is DFA and DFM ?
Answer- Design for Assembly (DFA) is a process in which products are designed keeping in mind the assembly and dis-assembly parameter. If a product contains fewer parts it will take less time to assemble and dis-assemble, thereby reducing assembly costs.
Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is the process of designing products, components and parts which adheres to manufacturing processes and ultimate goal is to make a better product at a lower cost. This can be achieved by optimizing, simplifying and fine tuning the design of product.
